What to track with osteoarthritis

An osteoarthritis symptom tracker works best when it matches how your condition actually shows up — not a generic pain diary.

Joint pain

Record which joints hurt and how severe pain feels — knees, hips, hands and spine are common in OA. Patterns over time are easier to review with a log than from memory.

Stiffness

Morning or after-rest stiffness is common in osteoarthritis. Log severity and duration — both often matter when your clinician assesses how OA is affecting you.

Function and daily tasks

Note how symptoms affect walking, stairs, gripping or work. Small changes week to week can signal when joints are getting harder to live with.

Activity and flare-ups

Mark harder days and note what you did differently. Over weeks, you can see whether activity, weather or treatment changes line up with symptom spikes.

Medication and treatments

Record doses taken, missed doses and how you felt afterwards. That context makes it easier to judge whether pain relief, injections or other treatments are working.

Sleep and mood

Chronic joint pain can affect sleep and wellbeing. A brief daily note helps connect the wider picture when you discuss management at clinic.

Why symptom tracking helps

Osteoarthritis can fluctuate week to week. A consistent log turns scattered days into evidence you can export before your next appointment.

Walk into appointments prepared

Export a PDF that summarises the months since your last visit — so you are not guessing whether pain, stiffness or function were worse in March or May.

Spot symptom changes early

Daily logs turn vague memory into a timeline. You can see when stiffness lengthened, pain worsened or daily tasks got harder — before symptoms pile up.

Understand what makes OA worse

Symptoms rarely shift at random. Tracking helps you connect pain and stiffness to activity, weather or treatment changes so you can respond sooner.

Track treatment effectiveness

Starting physiotherapy, adjusting analgesics or considering injections? Adherence and symptom trends in your report show whether treatment is helping over weeks.

Take the guesswork out of rheumatology appointments

Appointments often hinge on “how have you been since we last met?” — and memory is unreliable. Hurtl collects your osteoarthritis data over time, then turns it into a PDF report you can bring to clinic: averages, trends, WOMAC, lab results where relevant, flare days and medication adherence in one place.

  1. Log symptoms and labs in the app

Track pain, stiffness, fatigue, flares, lab results and medication for osteoarthritis as you go — not in a rush the night before clinic.

  2. See patterns between visits

Charts and WOMAC update from your entries so you know how the last weeks actually looked, not how you feel today. Scores in the app are estimates from your daily logs — not official clinical scores.

  3. Export a PDF for your appointment

Choose the date range, pick what to include, add notes for your clinician, and share a doctor-ready PDF from Home, Condition, Insights or any tab header.

You choose the date range, sections and clinician notes. Your log stays on your device until you export — the report is for preparation, not a clinical diagnosis. Clinical PDF export is included with Hurtl+.

WOMAC and how Hurtl helps

WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index) covers pain, stiffness and physical function. Hurtl calculates a WOMAC estimate from your daily logs on the Condition tab — with a 7-day trend and severity label. It is an estimate from your daily logs — not an official clinical score.

The three WOMAC domains (clinical)

When your clinician uses WOMAC, they combine three patient-reported areas:

  • Pain Severity of pain during walking, stairs, in bed, sitting or lying, and standing upright
  • Stiffness How stiff joints feel after waking, later in the day, and after sitting or resting
  • Physical function Difficulty with daily activities such as descending stairs, rising from sitting or household tasks

Your WOMAC estimate in Hurtl

Hurtl combines pain, stiffness and physical function from your logs for a running WOMAC estimate. You see today’s inputs, a 7-day trend and a severity label on the Condition tab.

Pain Stiffness Function

Scores in Hurtl are estimates from your daily logs — not official clinical scores. Your care team may calculate WOMAC differently at appointments.

Frequently asked questions

What should I track with osteoarthritis?

Most people find joint pain, stiffness and function the most useful starting points. Add flare notes, medication adherence and sleep when you want more detail. You do not need to log everything every day — consistency beats completeness.

What is WOMAC?

WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index) is a widely used patient-reported questionnaire for hip and knee osteoarthritis. It covers pain, stiffness and physical function — three areas that matter most day to day.

How is WOMAC calculated in clinic?

Clinicians use a standard questionnaire where you rate pain (5 items), stiffness (2 items) and physical function (17 items), usually on a 0–4 scale per item. Scores are summed or normalised for interpretation. Your care team will explain results in context.

Does Hurtl calculate WOMAC?

Yes. Hurtl calculates a WOMAC estimate from your daily logs — pain, stiffness and physical function — with a 7-day trend on the Condition tab. It is an estimate from your daily logs — not an official clinical score. Your clinician may use their own scoring at appointments.

Can tracking help with osteoarthritis management?

Yes. A symptom diary helps you notice when pain or stiffness is worsening, what may have triggered it and whether treatments are helping. That makes it easier to adjust activity, contact your care team or prepare for appointments with concrete examples.

Can I share symptom history with my doctor?

Yes. Export a PDF report for the period you choose — averages, pain and function charts, WOMAC trend, flare summary and medication adherence — and share it at your GP, physiotherapy or orthopaedic appointment. You control when and what leaves the app.

How does Hurtl help before an appointment?

Log symptoms as you go, then generate a report before clinic so you are not reconstructing the last three months from memory. That takes the guesswork out of questions like how often pain limited you or whether your current treatment is helping.
